Our First Partner Center
The Ongata-Rongai Special Care Center is our first partner organization in Ongata Rongai, a town about an hour outside of the Kenyan capital of Nairobi. The center was started in 2012 by Henry Konga, a special education teacher, and his wife Diana. The center is currently home to approximately 20 kids and young adults with developmental disabilities. A staff of five, plus Henry and Diana, provide full-time care for the individuals at the home This includes, feeding, bathing, changing diapers, teaching, and most importantly providing the affection that would otherwise be missing from these kids’ lives.
While the work being done by the fantastic staff at the current center is amazing, their facilities are significantly lacking. They currently operate out of rudimentary corrugated tin structures that lack many basic necessities. The team has already purchased land for more permanent facilities and is currently working to raise the additional funds needed for the build. The permanent structure will include accommodations for over 30 children, a classroom, recreational space, medical facilities, and a fully equipped kitchen. Not only will the medical facilities provide crucial therapeutic and daily medical needs for the children at the center, but they will also serve the local community for outpatient medical needs, pioneering the Konga Project’s initiative to facilitate an ongoing revenue stream for its centers.
With The Konga Project’s help the team has raised enough money to begin construction on the new land. They have begun creating a boarder around the lot as seen below.
